23RD & 24TH REINFORCEMENT.

VOLUNTARY RECRUIT] NG CEASES. I'OSITION IN CANTERBURY.. Voluntary enlistments for the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Reinforcements ceased on Monday and South Canterbury's shortage totals 69. The closing time was to hove been midnight on Saturday but tho time was extended till Monday. Voluntary enlistments for tho Twenty-filth and Twenty-sixth Reinforcements commenced yesterday but no enlistments had been received. Enlistments are received subject to the condition that should the recruit bo drawn, in the-ballot for the shortage for the Twenty-third or Twenty-fourth Reinforcements his voluntary enlistment becomes annulled. Up to yesterday the shortages in the ■ Canterbury Military District- were as follows: Area Group. Surplus. ■.-Shortage. C'hristehurch ... South Canterbury North Canterbury - AYest Coast ..'. It u.is expected that in the northeivn eitv there would be a big shortage but these expectations, it is satisfactory to state, were not realised. North Canterbury and tho West Coast, like Timaru are in a bad position, but Nelson reports a surplus -of 4. SOUTH CANTERBURY'S QUOTA. LEAVES TO-DAY. South Canterbury's quota, for tho -<Jnl Itemtorcemeiits will leave Timaru ror camp to-day. The men will; be entertained at luncheon in Stafford Jca Rooms by the Ladies' Committee ol the "War Relief Society at 12.30 p.m. Returned men and men on leave are also invited. The men will parade •it the Drill Shed at .3 p.m., and will be addressed by the Mayor (Mr E, R Cmnness), Mr J. CVaigie, M.P., and t.ie Rev. J. H. Rodgers.
