TIMARU DRAUGHTS CLUB.
.SOCIAL EVENING. The Timaru Draughis CJub brought to a eioso the most successful season in their annals oil Friday night in Hutchison's banquet room. Tliorc was a largo attendance of members, and a few friends, and under tho chairmanship ni' tho Club's genial president, Mr G. J. Sea ley, a Very pleasant evening ivaa spent. An apology was received from Mr A. Beck. After partaking of n bounteous spread, the toast of the King was suitably honoured. The next toast* proposed was that of the Draughts Club. This was entrusted to the president. He gave a short history of tho Club's three years of life, and mentioned that) this season was its high water mark. The Club carried out its meetings with the utmost harmony, and tho new members, particularly Messrs S. T. Crook. Hatpin, and Mclntyre, were great additions to the Club, tho first two had been prominent members or the Dunediu Draughts Club, even at its- commencement. Special thanks were due to the many friends for donations of draught boards, etc., during the year, and the "Herald" for giving suph attentions to their meetings. Ilie prizes won at the recent Club Competitions were then distributed. Tn the A team, Mr Munro received the first prize, donated by Mr Young, of G. and T. Young. Messrs Randall and Wilson, a dead heat, we re-tho next prize takers, the trophies being donated by Messrs McClatehy and Hutchison. Mr MclntVre took the third prize, presented by Sir Riddle. In the B team, the first prize fell to Mr 11. Home, jnr., it was presented by Mr Jones. The second prize was also tied for by Messrs R. Heme, sear., and Jones, and the trophies were presented by Messrs Priest l and Holdgate, and Purdom. The third prize was won by Mr G. J. Sealey: it was presented by Mr Munro. Messrs l-lalpin and Crooks were asked .to accept two cut glass' pedestal figures as mementoes of the Club's appreciation. The recipients of the prizes all responded in happy vein. ■ Mr Munro proposed the toast of the losers. A draught player he considered is generally a gentleman, a man of cool head and steady hand He coupled-the toast with tho names of Mr McClatchv. of the A grade, and Mr Menzies of the B gi ade. Messrs McClatchv and Menzies suitably acknowledged the compliment, and paid glowing tribute to the fine spirit of the Club. Mr Melntyro gave the toast of the prize-givers in felicitous terms, coupled with the names of Messrs Young, Munro, and Hutchison. These gentlemen were very happy in their responses, and kept the fun going merrily. Mr Jones rose to honour the boys at the Front, and this toast was fittingly responded to by Mr R. Home, junr., Messrs Abererombie, Doyle and Clair performing a like duty on behalf of the visitors. The toast of the caterer, Mr J. Hutchison, was also cordially honoured, and suitably replied to, and the Press and the Chairman were also arunk with musical honours.
Messrs Jones and Abererombie rendered very acceptable songs during the evening, the former having repeatedly to supplement, whilst the last named presided ably at the piano. Mr W. Young gavo with much ability a lengthy and interest sustaining recital, and the chairman told some tales of tho road in his host style. I'Auld Lang Syne"' closed a most enjoyable evening.
