FAIRVIEW.

PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS BALL.

On the 22ncl inst. the Fairviiew Euohre OJub helcl their annual wind-up, in the form t >4' a plain End 1 uncy dress ball. A hard-working committed had; arrangements well'l in hand, and, weather conditions being most favourable, the result was a hall attended by unqualified success. The onily fault to find, if such it may be tea-mod, was that the schoolroom was overcrowded, with the result that dances had to be duplicated, and many, driving in,from a distaaice, on seeing the congestion thought it wise to wend theiir way homewards once more, without attempting to join the mert ytuakers witMn.

Proceedings opened with tlw grand march, in which about sixty couples took part, and under the jilection <,f Mr Hugh Brosnalian, M.C., with Miss Davison ajfc the piano, dancing went 011 with zest till thd early hours of the morning. A feature of the evening was a waltzing contest in which there was much interest but little competition, only eight entries being received. The judge, Mr A. H. Abbott, awarded first place to Miss Heine Davidson and Mr H. McMillan. Voting for the best fancy costumes placed first Miss Berry (Indian Squaw) and Mr H. You dale (Santa Claus).

During an interval, the president, Mr C. Black, presented the prizes for the above, also those for most points in euchre, won during the preceding month, these latter going to Miss Brill and Mr Jim Gibson Special thanks are! due to Mr K. Mayo of Tima.ru, for generously donating to the Club a pair of silver vases, won hy Miss Rene Davison, for waltzing. The catering was in the capable* hands of Mr Hawkey, whose name in this particular branch spoils the hall-mark of success. Dancing went merrily till something after 3 a.m,, a'nd with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem, terminated one of the most successful dances ever held in the school.

The net result of the Euchre' Chib : s efforts throughout the session is about £l7 ss', which, lor a small club, is very good indeed. The money will be lianded over, in the first instance, to the local ladies' sewing guild, to be utilised for Red Cross purposes. Appended is a list of wearers of fancy costumes: —Miss Berry (Indiain Squaw), Miss Peairce (Weldon's Crochet Patterns), Miss F. Waddington (Gipsy), Miss D. Waddington (Serbian), Miss B. Johnson (Folly), Miss Gray (Italian), Miss Bczzanti (Gipsy Fortune Teller), Miss M. MoCauiiffe (Erin-go-bragh'l, Miss A. Erosnan (Britannia), Miss Siuillivan (France), Miss A. McAuliffe (Dutch Girl), Miss Husband (Roll of Honour), Miss Brill (Superstition), Miss M. Divison (Ruination), Miss R. Davidson (H.M.S. New Zealand), Miss Stella Wilds (Maori), Miss M. Wilds (Highland Lassie), Miss Haynes (Red Cross Nursed, Miss Rogers (Riussian), Miss McLintock (Belgian), Miss E. Gibson (Japanese), Miss Robertson (Tovoli Folly), Messrs '.Voudale (Santa Claus), J. Shin© (Jockey), A. Bliarik (Jockey), F. Robinson. (Breakdown), F. Naughton (Pierot), H. Speed C. Wright (Periot), T. Bower (Soldier,), ,T. Husband (Romeo), T. Wilkins (Mephistopheles). This enterprising country district is rabidly growingSn. popularity, and its social functions attract so many young people from both town and neighbouring districts that the schoolroom bias long since proved for too small. It is rumoured by "the man in the street" that a getaerous local gentleman lias made a sportinir, offe:r of a. section and timber for a hall. Time will prove the truth of the rumour, but the hall, when or if it does eventuate, will meet a long felt want in the community.
