CASUALTIES.
BENZINE EXPLOSION. " -PULLER DETAILS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) SYDNEY, Sept. 27. In tho Wairuna explosion tho killed were:—John Lewis Roberts Gamble, a Scotsman, Samuel Clarke, David Alexander, and Owen Vaggcrs. Ono of the injured men is not expected to survive. All those injured are local shipwrights. Tho explosion' 'occurred in the lower forehold, and a lire followed. It is supposed thai; a light came in contact with the fumes of benzine, although tho latter cargo was completely discharged last evening. Eighteen men who were working in 'the hold wero hurled in all' directions.
The firemen had the greatest difficulty in rescuing tho victims owing to the smoke and fumes. The killed were terribly mutilated. One was blown to pieces. Another was unrecognisable. Tho fire was subdued after an hour's work. The damage done to the steamer is not serious, hut it will delay her departure.
