FROM SEA TO AIR.
A NOTEABLE FLYER.

WELL IN GTQN, Aug. 29. Squadron Commrujder Wellesby Bigpworth, who has just added to his previous laurels by destroying, tangle-hand-ed, a, Gorman submaima by dropping bombs fro-m an aeroplane, is another daring soldier who has made lis way to a front without any official encouragement. Having served his apprenticeship in the mercantile marine, he was anxious to enter the Navy, but red tape of one shade and another stood in his way, and the most he could do towards gratifying his ambition was to take his turn of service in the Naval Reserve. Here, through tne good office® of-a personal friend, he was allowed to "try his hand at flying, and showing as much aptitude in the air as he had done on the sea, ho speedily became recognised as one of the most promising beginners in the new fie'd of achievement. The war gave him liis opportunity, arid finally leaving the sea with a master's certificate, 'ne had no difficulty in finding a place anions; the airmen now engaged at the front. Two or three months ago, be was mentioned in tjie cables as having, in another single combat, accounted for a couple of German aeroplanes, and now lie has eurpasied this feat by sinking a German submarine. Tn the interval he has been constantly employed with the British and French forces and has made many rotable excursions over the enemy's country. Flight Commander Bigsworth has relatives in Wellington and Christchurch .
