THE 6T. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION AND BRIGADE IN AID OP BED CROSS WORK AT THE SEAT OF WAR-

BRITISH EMPIRE'S WORK. RED CROSS AND ST. JOHN. LORD RANFTJRLY'S REPORT. LONDON, July 14. Replving to inquiries from *^ e ". Zealand Lord Ranrurly, on behalf ot the Red Cross Society and St. Jouu Ambulance Association, states that thev are working unitedly and ha\e sent to the Mediterranean Commissioner £20,400 in rash and £93,200 worth of stores. For helping t.ie wounded many ambulances had been sent, also 0110 hundred twenty voluntary aid detachments, _ rourteen doctors and nineteen orderlies besides other u'ficers. Each Men's Voluntary Aid Detachment consists of 51 members. Each Women's Voluntary Aid Detachment consists of 23 members. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE is urgently required for Military Hospitals and for general Red Cross purposes, and the Timaru Committee confidently appeals to the Public of South Canterbury for generous financial assistance. There must be no thought of economy when human lives are at stake, and the Red Cross Organisations are giving the very beet in men and women and goods. Much has been accomplished, but the work is not yet half done, indeed the need for voluntary effort is greater than ever, and so long as the war lasts it will be the duty of every loyal British Subject to do his utmost to ensure that adequate provision is made for this noble and colossal work. THE FOLLOWING ARTICLES ARE ALSO WANTED:— Flannel, wool, linen sheets, woollen pyjamas, woollen underclothing, blankets, bedsocks, woollen caps, socks, etc. MONEY WILL BE DEALT WITH AS FOLLOWS:— Part will be applied to Red Cross purposes in New Zealand in connection with training camps and returning sick and wounded, part will go to the hospitals in the Mediterranean, and the balanco will be forwarded to the Central Committee of the Association in London to be distributed to the various hospitals for Sick and Wounded in the Mediterranean, Great Britain, France, and Belgium. GOODS WILL BE DEALT WITH AS FOLLOWS:— A portion will be used for Red Cross purposes in New Zealand, and the balance will bo sent to the Mediterranean and London. SUBSCRIPTIONS MAY BE SENT to the "Timaru Herald," "Timaru Post,' or to the hon. secretary, Mr F- C. de Lambert, Stafford Street, 1 imaru, and will be duly acknowledged through the Press. A meeting of the Temuka Men's Red Cross Committee was held in tlio Parish Hall last Tuesday evening. Tnere were about five-and-twentv present, and Dr. Rugg presided. Mr De Lambert of the Timaru Red Cross Society, attended by appointment and explained many matters in connection with the working of their committee. The South. Canterbury Savage Club entertainers visited Holme Station on Thursday evening, and a large audienco assembled m the granary wliicii was prettily decorated and electrically lit, and a good temporary stage was piovided. A splendid supper was provided by tlio ladies. The usual flag sale yielded the excellent result or £BO 13s sd. Tile total receipts will be at least £IOO for the Red Cross fund. The flag fund wa.s chiefly furnished by Mrs H. Elworthy and Mrs A. Elworthy £5 each, and Messrs A. S. and H. Elworthy, final bid, £4O.
