COMMONWEALTH POST OFFICE.
.» A SEARCHING REPORT. Press Association—B.v Tel.—Copyright. -MELBOURNE, Aug. 25. Mr Robert McA nderson lias presented a. report of his enquiry into the Postmaster-General's Department. He severely criticises some of the- methods existing, and says that the most circumlocutory method is the one that seems to be usually employed, and the cost is enormous. He instances the fact that officers in adjoining rooms write long letters to one another, and even then the letters are not sent direct but through the deputy-post-master. A matter relative to a dispute between telephonists passed through the records 203 times, and comprised 539 pages, and the matter of repairs to a. telephone line went to [ 488 pages and passed through the J records 56 times. He says all that | seems wrong with the Postal Department is want of what is known as business management, and suggests amongst many other sweeping remedies, the appointment of a general manager with wide powers. To make up the deficiency of £501,000, he advocates increased telegraph and telephone rates, a reduction of the commission on the sale of stamps, and an increase in the bulk postage of newspnpers.
