MILITARY CAMPS.
FOR, SCKUTH CANTERBURY. The Bth (Soutli Canterbury) Mounted Rifles will go into camp at the Timaru show grounds for a week's training a? from Monday next. The camp is being whole day parades as it ie round that it suits country men niuCh better to put in a whole week's training tit one time than to attend occasional Whole-day parades. A useful week's work is expected, and during the camp the annual musketry course will be firOn Thursday next the regiment will hold a military tournament, and great preparations are being made to give the public a good afternoon's entertainment. It is confidently anticipated that the residents of the district will show their interest in the mounted men by attending in large numbers. The Regiment will be very short of officers, as out of 20 officers nine have left with the Expeditionary Force, and nearly all the i emainder have volunteered to go with the reinforcements. The shortage of officers will have home compensation however, in that it will afford better opportunity for the junior officers and non-coms. to show their metal. On the day of the tournament a special train will riin out from Timaru to the show grounds. . THE TNFA2sTIIY. In addition to the mounted camp a camp will be held at Pleasant Point for the 2nd (S.C.) Regiment* of Infantry, When the men from Fairlie. Cave, Albury, Pleasant Point, St. Andrews and Pareora will go into training to carry out the whole of their daylight parades in order to leave the shearing and harvesting time free from military duties. The Caledonian Groupds in the Point Domain have been placed at the disposal of the Regiment. The whole of the time will be devoted to musketrv and extended order drill. It is not the, intention of the officers to put on anything in the nature of a sports meeting; they will confine themselves closely to the work of completing the training required under the Defence Act. the m-eat object being to free the men for the farmers' busv eeiason.
