AMERICAN BUSINESS.
AFFECTED BY THE WAR. The following is an. extract from a letter received oy a Duneuin resident from li is son in Kidegewood, New York, U.S.A., and indicates how tiie war is affecting Amerioa—"'My word, but hasn't this war verily upset the whole world! Even in America nere— a strictly neutral country thousands cf miies from the seat of fighting —everyone seems to be affected in some way. The cost of living has gone up considerably, coal, meat, eggs, Hour, etc., all being up in price. Fresh eggs are now 60 cents (2s 6d) a dozen, and still rising. Two days ago we paid 4 2cents (Is 9d) for a pound of sirloin steak that was so tough that we could hardly eat it. Practically everything that people use has gone up in price since the >Var. Business everywhere has been teriously affected, many firms discharging many of their hands. The Sanger Manufacturing Company discharged 3000 hands last week, and put the other 4000 in their factory on half-time. Our grocer m Ridgewood says, that h : s business has decreased 50 per cent, during the last two months and til's is a common complaint among business The harbour in New York is lined with dozens of steamers, some great Atlantic liners, all doing nothing, the crews often being discharged, and thus adding to the great ever-increasing list of unemployed in the cities. We were glad to see by the evening papers that "the Germans were being beaten again and forced back. "While America is supposed to be strictly neutral, every t ; me the Allies win. the papers sing pra ; ses of England, France and Russia. . The papers bitterly denounce the Germans for some of their barbarous tactics, and call them a lot of 'uncivilised' barbarians.' "
