Eye-witnesses' reports of the Russian advance in Galicia state that at first it was preceded by wholesale flight of the people. The inhabitants soon learned better, and displayed the greatest friendliness, welcoming the troops with open arms and processions of priests, banners and crosses. Women brought provisions and declined payment. A thanksgiving service was held throughout Russia to celebrate> the reunion of Galicia, where Count Bebrinsky has been" appointed nor-General-A majority of the Russian regiments on the march carry the Czar's portrait, the men carrying it in turns.
