"ARTIFICIAL SIS."
SUNDAY GOLF. Interesting and —for a clergyman—unusual views on Sunday golf have been expressed by the .Rev. Stewart Jleadlam. who. at a meeting of the London County Council, asked: ••Where is tho wrong of taking a few balls and knocking tnem about when taicng your Sunday morning walks!-''' En.urging cu vhis query of his own. he expresses the fodow.ng views: — "From the Chr.st.an point of view, Sunday is tho day of worsh p and recreation. Tne Cnrist an should: of course, go to church first—early in the morning if ho likes and then he is free to devoto himself to these games which appeal to him. I think, however, that omy pastimes should be indulged in which dc not necessitate tho employment of working people. Surely .t- is outrageous to say that; men who fellow sedentary occupations, and who work hard for every day of the week, should not be allowed to amuse themselves on tho Sabbath. It is good to sec fellows playing cricket on the r.Uage gicen—it prevents them from loafing about. "The Council is wrong in not allowing Sunda'y golf in Ha nau.t ForestIt is tho old Puritanical feei-ng finding expresscn aga n. By creating an artil fic.al sin. siifh as th s, one ts blurring tho colours of good and evil. "When a man sees that- the Sunda.y games are descr.bed as sin he is apt to think liglhtly of other serious ins-deeds which are also called sins. At tho Loudon County Council meetings no one dares to advance the Purt-nn ca' argument. Instead, they say that pa, ma, and tho baby wid bo hu.dered in their morn-ng walks by the golfers. I hope tho question of bowls will also come before the council. It can't say that bowls interferes with pa, ma, and the baby, ami, what is more, it does not s've rise to Sunday labour. I am aware that in many public schools Sunday games are forbidden. But there the boys can play on every week day, and on Sundays they have other recreations —at- Eton \vc used to have glorious walks.''
