Though Labour has scored a victory, the Liberals are not defeated so badly as was at first indicated. Yesterday's count has placed the Liberal Senate candidates in a much better position. returned to Melbourne and are clearing up tlicir offices. THE NEW RULERS. THEIR CHIEF DUTIES. Mr Fisher has. summoned a meeting of his party for Friday to select a new Ministry. Mr Fisher, prior to leaving Brisbane, said their first duty would be to deal with the enemies of the country. Ho estimated the warlike expenditure at six or seven millions, and more to follow, but he was unapprehensive of the position. Then they must provide employment for their own people—employment on works of public utility. He intended to resubmit tho referenda proposals as soon as possible AMERICAN MEAT TRUST. PROGRESS OF INQUIRY. Mr Sidney Kidman gave evidence before the Meat Commission that he held no property in conjunction with Swifts or Armours. He was not interested in either firm. Tho only contract he ever had was to supply 5000 head of live stock to Armour's, delivered at AdelaideDROUGHT WORSE THAN TRUST. The witness predicted awful losses if the present drought continues.
