BALACLAVA CAPS. AN IMPROVED PATTERN. A rieasant Point resident writes us to publish tho following for* the Expeditionary Force.—Three skeins of wneeling wool knits two caps. No. 7 pins and No. 11, for the finishing parts, which draw clo.se round the face. Cast on 72 stitches on No. 7 pins, and knit in ribs of 3 plain and 3 purl for 35 rows, next knit 57 stitches still in ribs; turiu and knit, -12, leaving 15 stitches; turn and knit to within 15 stitches; put each or l 5 stitches on two spare it ee-dies, for theso will not be required for a time. Continue straight on in ribs of the centre pin for 36 rows, then proceed to shape the head-piece thus:— Knit 39 in. ribs, leaving three at end; turn, knit 36 leaving 3 at end; turn, knit 33, leaving 6 at end; turn, knit 30, leaving six at end; turn, knit 27 leaving 9 at end; turn, knit 24 leaving 9 at end; turn, knit 21 leaving 12 at end; turn knit 18 leaving 12 at end. turn, knit 15, leaving 15 at end; turn knit 12 leaving 15 at end; turn knit 9, leaving IS at end. Next row, knit in ribs to end, pick up IS stitches, down tho side of head-piece, as for a heel of a stocking, turn, knit in ribs beginning with 3 purl to end of pin and pick up IS stitches on opposite side of headpiece. Turn, and knit as in previous row. beginning with 3 purl, but proceed as in shaping the head, leaving 3 at end for two rows'. Then turn and knit, leaving 6 stitches at each end, and so on until IS stitches arc loft at each end of centre pm; turn, and knit to end, and p:ck up the 15 st't-hes on one off the spare pin-; turn and knit to end, and pick up the other 15 off tlie spare l 1'". Thero are now 10S stitches on pin. Knit 20 rows, now for No. 11, pins so as to bring cap close round the face; knit to within 33 stitches of the end; turn, knit to within 33 at end of pin; turn, knit in ribs right to end of pin for 2 rows ; repeat these four rows twice more; knit to within 39 of end of row, turn, knit to within 39 end of row; kr.it back to <>nd of pin; repeat tlie last three rows three times r.io-.'e; cast off, sew up the joins; comes right up to or o\ or mouth. This makes a. very comfortable cap, which almost covers tlie face.
