AUSTRALIA.
VALUE OF PREPAREDNESS. GERMAN FLEET MENACE. Presa Association —By Tel.—Copyright. Received 8.20 p.m.., Sept. 4th. MELBOURNE, Sept. 4. Mr Millen, Minister of Defence, says —"The public does not realise that a bloody war is actually reddening the world, or that the very preparedness of Australia has kept blood stains from Australian soil. Our enemies have a fleet in the Pacific quite capable 'of doing serious damage, and so far it has succeeded in eluding our own fleet—not a difficult proposition in the million islands of the southern, seas. The important point is that they would like to raid our commerce, destroy our ships in harbour, and help themselves to coal. But men and guns are .ready at all vulnerable points."
