DOG TRIALS.

ANNUAL GATHERING. AT BURKE'S PASS. ' The -Mackenzie Collie Dog Club ran off its twenty-fourth annual competition on the 19th' and 20th inst., under somewhat varied conditions. Up till midday on the latter date the weather was particularly favourable; then a sudden change set in, and a wet afternoon was experi«ced for the final event. Nevertheless, good progress was continued, with the result that all proceedings were finished m good time. Another detraction from pronounced success was the erratic performing of a number of.the dogs, -wellknown and tried dogs failing to score "\ a " most unaccountable manner. Otherwise the success of the whole gath-

ering was very gratifying, viz., most liberal patronage by donors of valuable and attractive special prizes, numerous nominations, a iargfe gatherig nnanimou goodwill, excellent judging, and the various posts filled and pushed through with commendable promptitude, all lending their weight towards the grand result, placing the gathering on a higher plane than its predecessor. The gratifying fact also obtained that rarely have so many local shepherds and voung tyroes come forward, and hating obtained a goodly measure of success, thev will be encouraged to become a factor .'in seourlnS the much desired success of next year's big meeting—the club being bent on making that, it", twenty-fifth meeting a conspicuous mark on its register. The club s annual "ball also was a •pronounced success. At the conclusion of the trials three hearty cheers was given the judge on the call of the presidnt, and later on a similar compliment was accorded host and hostess, Mr and Mrs McMillan, in' recognition of the excellent manner they had catered for the comfort of so bin- a gathering.
