In a court case Hugh Dalrymple, an ex-convict, against Baroness Von Goetz, a wealthy philanthropist and organiser of a farm for discharged prisoners, Dalrymple alleged that he lent tlie baroness money, and produced scores of the baroness's letters containing endearments. In the course of a sensational crossexamination counsel proved that Dalrymple was convicted of frauds on women in 1896. In order to explain discrepancies in the letters Dalrymple alleged that a twin brother was responsible. Dalrymple's counsel threw upi his brief. Evidence was given that the baroness had £40,000 in the bank at the time of the blackmailing. A verdict was returned for the defendant. The Judge impounded one hundred letters which were obvious forgeries. VENGEFUL WORKMAN. MURDER AND SUICIDE. ST. PETERSBURG, March 4. A waiter and clerk in a restaurant in Soho were sentenced to nine months for theft. It was stated that when tliey were arrested seven other waiters stampeded, not waiting to Teceive their wages, and that the restaurant takings had since increased £SO a week.
