Sir, —We, as representing number of men from tho south 'n soanih of harvesting work, wish to c-iter an emphatic protest against U.c statements mado in Saturday's "Hui-all 1 * by Mr A. Thoreau in reply to a complaint that an agent was ig in the "Otago Da.ly Times,'' fj>r harvesters for South Canterbury, urd that large numbers of men, -is a result- of tho advertisement, Vad coi-ie from Southland and Otngo and um*.d that no work was to be had, or wys in sight for some weeks. We -vent- to Mr Thoreau's house on Thursday «»v-jniig. and told him we had come in response to his advert'sement. Mr Thoreau repliecl: I cannot place you, Lr*eaus« I have got eighty men on my brvks already." During the eonv.»r*u!on which followed, Mr Thoreau lwame excited, and advised us to walk to Pleasant Point, where he relieved work might b? got.
