POLICEMAN STJUD FOB, BREACH OF PROMISE. £2OO DAMAGES A policeman's love affairs ivcra revealed at Middlesex bheriif'o Com-t, iJreuifoid, when the Uutlir-laienu and a jury assessed damages in a breach, of promise brought by Miss Clara Amu elJisuorj, a barmaid, of -\'ew road, Battcrsca, against P.O. Jolm Cowie, lladndr street., Chelsea. It was stated that the plaintiff and defendant became acquainted whilst living in Limehouse, and continued an aticctlonato acyuaintace lor six or seven years. Miss Ihs'hop obtained a situation at a JJattersea publ.e. bouse, and defendant was moved to the same district. The marriage was fixed for October 3rd. 1910. and defendant left her situation, but just before the wedding day defendant announced that he ill, ami the wedding did not take place. A second date, last" summer, was mentioned for the wedding, but then defendant pleaded his mother's illness as a cause fur further postponement, and eventually the defendant t.tatcd that he should not mai'rv the plaintiff. Plaintiff said she' had received Sl'o letters from the defendant. One dated February L'ord. 1911. contained the following passages:—"Mr darling Fairy,—l never thought a few hours ago that I should ever write the above to you again. Fairy, but in mv heart you will always be that, and no" matter what'happens it would be just the sumo. ... I can only sav again. God bless you, and if trying will make any amends for what 1 have made you suffer, dear, you need not fear, and 1 am sure you will not regret it. 1 cannot bear to think how "near both our lives may have been altered if you had nut been well, Fairy."
