K'e champion cornet solo wa 3 won j os T. Goodcli. Wellington Tramways, | 93, E. C. Sullivan. Lvtteiton Marine, : S3; S. Williams, Woo!teton, 90. j A protest was entered against tha I decision in the Quickstep competition. jAn announcen-ent was made at the ! show grounds \to the effect that Wool- \ sion had won,- hut this was amended \by a subsequent recount. The p<ro- : test was entered by the Wcolston i Band who objected to the recount be» : ing made in the absence of the repr©» ; sc-ntatives c: each band. \ THE GAREISON BAND'S "LISZT." Commenting on the performance of : the Timaru Garrison Eand at the Cbristchurch contest when the playing ! of one of the test pieces, "Liszt,""tie \ "Lyttelton Time?" says:— i The Timaru Garrison Band, with . ilr A._ Sohnack as eonductor, opened out well, but was rather lacking in fire. The lento movement was faulty, and the intonation "ould have been grcaxly improved upon, the trombone especially going astray t>x- times. Th« andante movement Vas fairly good, and the crescendo sa'ssfactory, while the pianissimo was excellent. The '- Baixie of Huns " was. very pleasingly played, although the crescendo could nave been improved upon consderablv. Tiv? hand was playing surprisingly WBU, although a few wrong notes could b* detectd ccca'sionauv. In the "Lorelei," the euphonium lacked expression, and the band met with difficulties in intonation, as, in fact, did all the competing bands. The pomposo movement was not quite a success, and the early soprano bars wre not heard to their full advantage, while the trombone was more careful than correct. There was strong body and good mnsi- . cal tone in the Hungarian Fantasia, aud the "Dream of Love" was tastefully done. The cornet cadenza wa» very prettilv played; small faults were present, although they were hot momentary. The difficult piano passages towards the end suffered a little in intonation, and in the Hungarian Rhapsody the treatment of the Basses was not quite correct. All ti© fiT "** passages were well done, the soprano Being perhaps a little «t fault. He performance was a good aH round one, being generally tuneful and wrthotxs exaggeration. f The Christehurch Press, comzaezrtang • on the same performance, says:— ! The Timaru Garrison, under Mir £. Schnack. were the nest in order, and JJrey got quite a hearty reception. They opened well, and gave the Jsntp and andante nicely. The pin mosso chords were well done. The cornet find soprano did esoeoMonally good work 522 the "Battle of Huns," x-nif the band ensemble was very good. The basses were responsible for some eseei.ent playing. The euphonium , player managed the "Loreley" song ; very well. The trombone cadenza was ; c-scellemly managed. The Hungarian j Fantasia wa 5 well trented. BoS th» : cornet and soprano did fine work in *ke ''Liebstraum,'' the cornet especi- ' ; cliy doinjj nicely. The Bhapsody was ; handled, though hardlv with the swing that one cjrpected. The boprano made a bad break in the ; facsto vivace, but tho presto -rant off j vary well.
