The noble work of Dr Barnardo's Homes* for tlie waifs and strays of London, lias never lacked appreciation in New Zealand. The homes Lave no endowments, but are supported purely by contributions, and during- the last year, owing to general causes for which those who carry on the work are not responsible, and over which they have had no control, the revenue has fallen off to such an extent that unless the public rally to their assistance the philanthropic operations of the homes must be seriously curfailed. 'An appeal has therefore been sunt out by the President, ;Lord Somerset, for further subscriptions to these institutions which have converted thousands of the flotsam and jetsam of London's poorest quarters into useful, self-supporting citizens. The appeal, which was published in our columns on Saturday, is supported by the Eev. A. E. Hunt, the local secretary for the homes, jrio incites ihe citizens of

Tiniaru to attend a meeting to be held to-night in Budd's tearooms, Stafford Street, for the purpose of arranging for a systematic canvass for subscriptions. As local secretary Mr Hunt will be glad to receive donations on behalf of the homes, and to furnish boxes for any business firms willing to give them a place in their establishments. The work which was commenced by " the father of nobody's children," as the late Dr Bnrnardo was affectionately and admiringly called, and which has been continued since his death on the lines which he laid down, is not a new or doubtful movement, but his proved its claim during l many yours to the best support of all who value true philanthropy or take pleasure in assisting a good cause. We can warmly commend this appeal to the 7>eople of South Canterbury, and will be glad to acknowledge and to forward to the headquarters of the homes any subscriptions that may be made through the " Herald" to this most worthy
