A deputation would wait on the Council in reference to the proposed bridgo erection at Cannington CHfl. A\ ith Mr Lvall lie had attended tho conference ot local bodies on auctioneers' license foes, and also destruction of small birds, and a separate report showed the decisions arrived at. Jt was reported t:> himf that the'head works of tho Wnihoo writer races had received considerable damage owing to the action of tho AVaitaki m opening up a newcouivp for itself, and as the matter Mas of great importance and urgency he had instructed the engineer to inspect, and rennrt. The report. which was submitted to the wat'Mcommittee, showed that extensive repairs would he needed to ensure the safetv of the water scheme. The cost of theft* repairs, added to the usual maintenance charge, would necessitate a high rate l>eim£ levied this year, and the committee bad adom-ed tho' Mi£;;rstion that instead <:f tlic whole liability being ma do a charge on the current year's transactions a rate of 2d in the C be struck which would permit of the payment heinij distributed over t-lrs and next- year. A reply from the Commissioner of Crown Jjiinds regarding the proposed bridle track up the Uaitaki river is unfavourable to the proposal, on the grounds .that the Crown and other properties nave ample road provisions in other directions, rendering the cbnstuictioii of a bridle track unnecessary. !

, « he recent flood in ihe "Waihao river ha£ tended .somewhat more than formerly 1 to increase tlie flow in the northern, branch to the risk.of deserting the south channel. Unless something is .done by way of correcting this before another heavy flood occurs it is probable the river may adopt the north course entirely, and should- it do to tlie danger of damage to the bridge approaches would have to be provided against by the construction of proteccivc .works in some form or another It inight be arranged to do the works originally contemplated above and beW the bridge, on the understanding tliat the Government contribution would be made after the sitting of I arlianient and secured for that purpose. —The chairman and Mr Dchr- , niann to make enquiries on this, with

S. ftl worthy's consent to do so tho'engineer be authorised to arrange- for the construction of the .stop-bank, to prevent overflow of river from damaging the public road. CANNINGTON JiRIDGE.

Messrs Verity, Hrown. Cochrane, and Howell waited on the Council, urging that the proper place for the bridgo over the upper Pareora was at Martin s Crossing, and not at Cannington Clif). whore, Mr Verily claimed, it would he a " monument'of folly." Mr Urown claimed that there was ton times the need for a bridge at Martin's Crossing that, there "was at Cannington Cliff. Mr Lvall agreed that the bridge at Martin's Crossing was the better site and that ultimately it bridge would have to be put there. After the deputation had withdrawn to adhere to the Council's decision in favour of the Canning.ton Cliff site.
