PERSONAL ITEMS.

Dr Finch, district health officer, was iu town yesterday. Mr J. Pritchard, lately departmental manager at Messrs J. Ballantyne and Co's., Timaru, baa been appointed to a similar position with Messrs Strange and Co., Christchurch. .Mr Pritchard is at present enjoying a holiday at Lake Tekapo.

Bandsman Burns, of the Marine Band, had an honour conferred on him this week by Major Macdonald, Commandant of the Cadet Forces, who requested that he should act as his bug-; ler at the camp of instruction on the bliow grounds. Bandsman Burns was bugler to the Commandant at the Kitchener camp in Ohristchurch.

Much, sympathy is felt for the parents of Hugh. McDonald, the youth who died at Kimbell on Thursday. He had only been ailing about a week, with a cold from which a fatal inflammation developed. His father was working :away from ibme, and as the lad's illness was not thought to be so serious, ha was not. earlier sent for, so that he arrived home only half an hour before his son died. Mr Alex. K. Provan, a member of the linotype operating staff of the "Timaru Herald," was met by his fellow employees "round the stone" during the supper adjournment lost night, and presented with two useful articles as a mark of esteem on the occasion of his approaching marriage. The presentation was made by the editor, who with the sub-editor and business manager referred in highly complimentary terms to Mr Provan, and wished him and the future Mrs Provan long life and happiness. Mr Provan suitably acknowledged the compliments paid him.
