THE EASTERN MOLE.

To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald." Sir, —I am very sorry that any man should be short-sjghtecl not.ti) recognise Mr Evans' exceptional good work in. connection with the Eastern Mole. But for Mr Evans forcing the engineers to adopt his plan wo would have suction pumps carting sand and shingle across the present harbour. The ratepayers would be paying double the rates, no ship could be secure in a st-orm from the southeast, and our harbour would be full of sand. That is ; one of the reasons we should speci-' ally honour Mr Evans. ."We would have a white elephant like they have in Napier and Gisborne, and we would have a big engineering staff to pay to direct the shingle int-o proper channels. Oamaru was a better place to make a harbour. Why liave they net succeeded as at Timaru ? They had uo Mr Evans there. That is another reason. The third reason is, "Fair' Play" is honoured and . every South Canterbury ratepayer -is honoured for the good work done in connection with the building of the Eastern Mole, and all by people who live away from. South. Canterbury, and wliom oan we thank for it? Mr "V\]m. Evans. Most of those opposed to Sir Evans when 'he wanted the eastern mole started, admit tliat' it is the correct- tiling; but it- seems there are n few selfish people left yet, and they cannot see anything good unless tliey do it themselves. Now I will admit tliere were some people who gave their time freely to the service of the ratex-ayers and tlie Board, but none like Mr Evans, and as to some othprs, it would pay the ratepayers and th? Board to f?;ve them a. first-class ticket Home and never enter the Board again for anything- that was for the good of the Board or ratepayers, was opnosed to them. "Fair Play" says that Mr David Stuart was not long on the Board. Xow wo all value men t-or the good they do, not f.n>- the harm they do, and "Mr David Stuart has di>ne as much good in a week as £omc have done for years. If ''Fair Piuy" w.ll turn up the files of tlie "Timani Hera'id" he will find that Mr Dav.d Stuart was for a long' tima on the Timaru Harbour Board, when the' services of a good man were - most wanred, and he will iind scores of letters in the "Timaru Horakl"' why the things he wanted done were right, 1 and at the same -tine educating "Hair -Flay" and his equals if they were here at the time, and I say; next to Mr W'm. Evans Mr Stuart is' -the man that should be honoured, and I challenge "Fair Play" to prove the contrary. Mr Stuart as long as I have known him, and that is about SO vears, took a very great interest 'n tlie Timaru harbour, winch we are all very proxid of for the. p.od lias' dune. I have no axe to grind, but give- honour to wh-ori honour is due. —I am, etc., D. ANGLAND.
