AMUSEMENTS.

HATWARD'S PICTURES. A very good audience, all circumstances considered, filled tho Theatre Royal last evening, when Hayward's Company on re-opening presented ono of the most attractive series of films screened in Timaru for some time. The entertainment, bright and instructive, 'was helped by the excellent musio of I a talented orchestra. Tho first film presented was an interesting series of j 4l Scenes in Holland." Tho customs, sometimes quaint and ©veii laughable, of the Dutch people wero hotter taught than by any geography book or | icle of travels, and the pictures gave a good idea of favoured spots cf tho state. There an impressive touch of'the historic in a film that g»vrs glimpses of tho scenery along tic Thames to Greenwich, including tho famous Tower of London. Powerful dramatic studies have their 1 sual pJace on the programme. In "The Stolen Heir " the plot is admirably conceived, a cleverly trained dog being the detective in the picture play. Another good dramatic picture, "Tho Sex," pourtrays the adventures of a homeless orphan girl, who, in o-.dor to secure employment, disguises hrrself as a boy. Trouble ensues, but in the end the girl marries the head of the firm. A film showing the German fleet is one of absorbing interest at the present time, aud in tlio latest Pathe Gazette are included many of the more important happenings in England end Europe during recent months. In tne humorous series, "Teddy Shrugs his Shoulders, n " The Trust Buster," and "Fair Exchange" provided plenty of genuine amusement. Hayward's will show this fine programme at a matinee this afternoon, repeating the outertainment in tho evening. FULLER'S PICTURES. Counter attractions last evening were not sufficient to cause any suspicion of a slackening of interest in Fullers' latest budget of moving pictures, ftjid Olympia was attended another good audience. Perhaps it is repetition to sny that the ikjw s-erles- is quite up to the standard expected _ from this enterprises firm, but one is perfectly justified in emphasising the statement. Bright, amusing,- and instructive films and plenty of ir.usic (the orchestra numbered eleven last night) fill a fine up- | to-dnte programme, and applause reaches its highest point when such . £{* ms as "Tho. Italian Lakes," "Lourdss," and ° In Old California," are screened. The selection will be submitted this afternoon and again this evening.
