A Londoner, writing to a > friend in Timoru, expresses the opinion that rio other country in the'world could koop on iniporthig as England does, and get along, hut it is uo trouble- to her as her income is so great. He says, however,, it is a great drawback that the wealth is in. such few hands, as poverty to so . many is the result. "You see it every where—men. women and children in rags and filth." Drink is also a contributory cause of the poverty, people drinking freely bocauso it is cheap, London, says the writer, has improved a great doal of recent years, but in the country things are going back if v - anything. The land ■ is not worked as it used to, bo, and lots of it is in pasture, i the holders saving that it does not pay to con it. The real reason it is not worked, 5n his opinion, is because the wealthy men who'own it would sooner keen it for shooting and hunting over. The writer further says that meat is very clear at Home just now, and peoplo are paying big prices for almost everything. During a thunderstorm which j.r.ssed over New Plymouth on Deceub:r 24. a house on the Esplanade >vas invaded by a number of small who were bathing in the surf, i>nd were frightened by the storm. Inc lady of the house had some »i.vi,U visiting her at the time, and they were not a little astonished, as veil as amused, to see a trcop of naked little water babies running into ihe house, where they w-»re p-ovkl-pd " ith snob clothtnn- -.is could be found, «irle their own, which had been left . >i ihe beach, was brought in and dried. There seems to be a wave of prosperity throughout Australia and New Zealand, says the Hon. ,1. Drysdale Brown, Attorney-General of Victoria, who is visiting Auckland.
