VISITIiNCr PLAYERS ENTERr TAINED. Visiting players from different parts of the Dominion, who wcro engaged in the Chess Congress concluded on Tuesday evening, were entertained 6y the Mayor, Mr Jas Cruigie, and 31 ss Craigie, in the Arcade Cafe yesterday afternoon.. Several members of luo Timaru Association, with their friends, wore also present, and 'with speeches and the presentation of prizes the iiiiic.ion was a most enjoyablo one. . Mr Craigie said that he was very pleased -to seo so many present, and | accepting a little of Timaru's hospitality. Ho believed that the chess players had spent a very happy time, tii:>.i t 'li they could nob have seen much of Timaru, for not only did they play during the day but also' at night.. The game right through, he understocd, had been played in a sportsmanlike fashion, and Mr" W. E. Mason had proved himself the best man. Mr Craigie said he .hoped that if the championship were taken from Mr Mason next year ha would be in quite as good form as he was now, and that the standard of play would: not be any lower. It was not the first time Mr Mason, had got to the top, for tliree times previously he had won the championship, and no doubt he thoroughly deserved his win on tihe: present occasion. As Mayor of. the town and i citizen, he'hoped that the visitors had spent a. . pleasant time, and he also hoped that they would take away good impressions of the place and of the people of TSmaru. Mr G. P. Wood, President of the Timaru. Chess Association, said that the congress had passed off to local players' satisfactioa, and he hoped also to the satisfaction of visitors. When first asked to take it; grave doiibrs were expressed as to Whether they could do so satisfactorily, but when promises- of support began to oomo in', they decided to try. They were giad they had followed this course, Mid. would be pleased to take their turn again when the time came. Mr Craigie'then presented, the przes to the" victorious players,W-E. Mason,; the champion; A. W. 0. Davis, the second manj.Tno. Mason, .third, and.' Messrs Hicks, Mara, and Dunlop who divided-fourth and fifth prizes.: ■",<■ ■'.-. These all returned on behalf of their, fellow-players referred. to the; pleasant time they had spent in Timaru. Mr Mara, who is ab> pi player, was heartily complimented by Mr Craigie;on his success. .- , ' . Messrs Beck, Cuihbert and the P'y. Mr Foot all spoke of the congress with. its happy associations, and before dispersing after the singing of "Aiiid Lang Syne," 1 Mr Craigie,was _applauded for Ins courtesy and hospitality A special vote of thanks was nUo accordedrto'the Timaru "Herald" for its full and accurate reports, of the congress ■'- ■' -For thte brilliancy- prize of £2 2s. offered four games, out of the fiftyfive played were entered. ■: They will be submitted to Messrs W.
