THE LABOUR PARTY.
AN EDUCATIVE MOVEMENT. A well-attended meeting of the Timaiu branch of the Labour Party was held in Hutchison's rooms last Air Jesse Reader presidium This was the first of a series of°meet™os to be held for the purpose of elucidating the platform of the Party, for the benefit of any who may not have as full a knowedge of it as they might desire, and all interested will be free to attend and listen to or take part in the debates. The subject for discussion last night was the objective of the Labour Party —" To maintain upon the statute books the progressive legislation that has already been enacted and to insist upon its sympathetic and proper administration; to indicate comprehensive measures and establish such conditions as will foster and ensure equality of opportunity, also the moral, material, and educational advancement of the general comfort and well' being of the whole of the people, based, upon the gradtual public ownership of all the means of- production, distribution, and exchange." Mr G. Roller took the . affirmative, and Mr P. Coates, the negative side last night, the speakers bringing out clearly and forcibly all their arguments for and aaainst. Their sneeches were followed by a genera! discussion of a useful character, and at the close tile two leaders were accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
