ARE NOT INDEPENDENT- I i POLITICAL PRESSURE IS PELT. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Oct. 31. Some strong; comments were passed on ou>- judicial .svstcm as relating to Magistrates, by Mr H. W. Northeroit, SAL. this afternoon., when a presentation was made to him on his retirement from the' Magisterial Bench. " Our Magistrates are not independent.' 7 said Mr Xorthcroi't. " They are subject to too much political interference."'' He went on to say that this constituted a grave danger to the fairness and impartiality with which n Magistrate ought, to carry out his work." " Magistrates." lie continued, " l::!;l industrial and other disputes brought lici'iri l them outside, their usual judicial work, and constant endeavours were- made from influential sources to brine; them under the whip.'." In concluding, Mr Xorfchcriiit said it was the duty of tlie citizens of the young Dominion, wliile there was yet time, to move in the matter of making the Magistrates ln ~ dependent as the Supreme Court Judges.''
