£1.100,000 IN A SUNKEN BRITISH WARSHIP. Another attempt is to be made to saive the British warship Lutine, which was wrecked about- a century ago on the coast of Holland. The romantic venture is to be carried out by the National Salvage Association, Ltd., the statutory meeting of which was held recently. The* chairman (Mr \Y. A. Smith) mentioned thc.t the main object for which the company hud been formed was the salving oi' certain wrecks in South Africa. but they !iad had brought before their notice the question of salving a liritibh" war vessel which was wrecked much nearer home, namely, H.jM.S. Lutinr*, wrecked 011 the eoasl of Holland about a century ago. ami thus much newer than the two vessels which they had boon principally formed to salve. This particular voss-M was somewhat historical, and attempts; to salve, her had been numerous during the century. Of the 1: i .1200.(>'!:) which she was said to contain only Cl'Ht.fKtO had so far been recovered. so that there was a very large amount .still there. They had been able to make very satisfactory arrangements both with IJovd's and with the authorities in Holland. 'I hev had also arranged to take over on favourable terms the j appliances and plans of the New Luj tine Company, which was the last enm- | pany which attempted to salve that I vessel. Although many failures had been made in the past in this direction thee was? no reason, lie thought, U -J:y fl'oy should nor be .successful, because they were a bio to hrinir to bear knowledge? and the use of scientific implements such as were undreamt of a few years Ago. He admitted the company hacS been regarded by some as interested •n " n wild-cat venture," but it was interesting to remember that the telephone business was also similarly regarded at it? commencement. Thev imposed to test their equipment, and their crew by the salving oprrations on the Lutim? fnr the jv-sfc of tli° 't->-«®n+. year, nnd ti"ui f7.-. t:: y v % tn +he wrpr-'c **l n'ti. Af'-*--.
