CRIMES AND OFFENCES.
A MALINGERER, Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Oct. 14. George Edward Smith, a prisoner serving four years imprisonment, who has been before the Court en a charge of malingering, was summarily dealt with by Mr Bartholomew S.M. this afternoon. Accused pretended to be totally blind in one eye and partially blind in the •other, but the evidence of Dr liitdo Ferguson and Dr Stenhouse denounced his claims as mere malingering. He said amongst other things that lie had his lachrymal glands removed, which Dr Stenhouse said was false. Mr Bartholomew sentenced him to be put on bread and water for reven dayß, and to forfeit 720 marks, which practically means that he will serve three months longer than he would have done if good conduct had earned him the usual concession. A FORGER "WANTED." A warrant has been issued for the arrest of William Miller (who carried on business here as a money lender, and who disappeared nine days ago) on a charge of forgery. The charge is that he altered a promissory note for £5 10s to- £25 10s, and discounted it, getting £25 for it. Miller is .ripposed to have left the countrv. A petition has been filed in the Supr?me Court asking that Miller be declared a bankrupt. It is understood that the total amount owing to'his creditors is about £6OOO.
