NEW SOUTH WALEES ELECTIONS.
KEEN INTEREST. SOME RESULTS. Press Association-By Telegraph-Copyright Received 10.15 p.m., Oct. 14th. SYDNEY, Oct. 14. The weather was line, and the polling was generally heavy. All parties showed extreme activity, hundreds of vehicles of all sorts being pressed into service. There was a rush when the booths opened, and polling was steady throughout the day. There was another rush towards the close, and the booths were crowded. Women showed increased interest, and recorded their votes much more freely than at the previous election. Returns are coming in very slowly. The early figures show that the Liberals are fairly holding their own. Mr Wade and Mr McGowan are back with large majorities. Mr Sydney Keegan (Labour) defeated Mr Hogue, Minister of Education, _c Glebe; Mr Osborne (Labour) defeated Mr Oakes, honorary Minister, at Paddington. Labour also won the King division of the City from the Liberals" Mr McGowan defeated his Liberal opponent by nearly three to one. Received 1.13 a.m., Oct. loth. The latest returns are:—Labour Party 44, Liberals 38. The Local Option returns are extremely back-ward. In six cases reduction is favoured, and in fourteen continuance. It is reported that Petersham carried no license. [The position of parties in the expired Parliament was— Government supporters 53, Labour 37. Three Labour members have been returned unopposed, but all the Government supporters have had to contest their seats In every one of the 90 electorates Labour candidates are seeking election, whilst in 12 there are no Government candidates. Mr McGowan. the leader of the Labour Party, in a recent speech estimated that as the result of the poll his partv would count on 57 members in the ne\y Parliament.!
