NORTH CANTERBURY BOARD. CHRJSTCMUJtCH, Oct. 13. The Education Board decided this morning to give consideration to tlie question of appointing: woman inspectors of schools when the next, vacancy occurred :n the inspecting staff. The Board Ji;ui before it a report that tlis City Council had caused the lionscs at' city schoolmasters to be entered on the valuation roll with a view to rating the buildings. The committee recommended that an emphatic protest- should be entered against thi-; action, and that the attention of the Govenimcn be called to it. I'lio chairman said that residences had hitacrto been regarded as exempt Ironi rating and it might be necessary to test the position iu the Supremo Court.

The Board decided to endorse the Otago petition to Parliament praying for an amendment of the Education Act in the direction of relieving teachers of smaller schools from the responsibility of examining and promoting pupils, and establishing a special inspecting staff to do this work. The Board, however, preferred that the schools should be classed as efficient and non-otficient. rather than that a distinction be drawn between city and country schools.
