SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
Despite the threatening aspect of the weather on Wednesday morning a good number of members and friends <>t the I'airview Mutual Improvement Society, numbering close on a hundred, journeyed out to "Otipua," the residence of Mr J. Withel], whose lovely fields and grounds were lent for the picnic. Games of all kinds were entered into by young and old. and kept- going until after five, when the weather became dull again, and caused tho picnickers to make'hastv preparations for home. After ie'a the Rev. AY. Baumber called for three hearty cheers fur Airs Wit-hell ami iamily, and the whole party having their lugs full of fresh air, responded vigorously.
The weekly meeting of the Hope nf annataitai Lodge, 1.0. G.T. was hold nil "\\ ednesday evening;, Bro. Emmersdii C.T. presiding over a fair attendance. One candidate was initiated into tlie lodge. Bro. Smith was presented with the prize which ho won a fortnight ago in the darning competition, and suitably responded. Recess was declared by C.T. for the purpose of carrying out the programme of the evening which was "Parlour Games." Bro. Smith being responsible. The members present entered into the games with much zest and a pleasant hour was spent by all present.
