BOARD OF EDUCATION.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held in the Board's offices yesterday, being attended by Messrs W. AI. Hamilton (chairman), Geo. Lyall, W. Lindsay, G. J. Sea ley, J. Maze, T. Sherratt, C. S. Howard, and G. \\. Armitage. The Chairman reported that- Miss Mary 0 'Connor' had now taken up her duties as probationer at AYaimataitai. He had had some interviews with Mr Don with reference to the access io the Waikakihi School "and an offer from him to give a right of way for the sum of £IOO wotild be laid before members. The new school at Pareora East was opened on the 7til inst-., when the Board was represented by Mr Lyall and himself. With reference to the Board's efforts towards securing a piece of ground at AYaimate for the purposes of agricultural instruction he understood that the A. and P. Association were offering three acres adjacent to the show grounds, rent free. That •would he satisfactory, as the land was conveniently situated.

iliss Scully was appointed teacher at Kosewill, and two names were selected from the applications for headmaster at Pareora to be forwarded on to the Committee. There were no applications for the position of teacher at Rockwocd, and it was decided to read-vc-rtise.

Inspector Gotv reported unfavourably on the petition from several residents of AYafkakahi for the erection of a school at- McCullouglrs bridge, the petitioners having contended that tlie southern end of the district was. totally unprovided for. —The Board agreed that it could not see its way to accede to the request. YYAIMATAITAI SCHOOL.

Me>srs C<_ .J. Sealev and C. S- Howard reported having visited the AVaimataitai School on the 6th innst. for the purpose of recommending the best menus of using the grant from t-he Government for building two classrooms for iiitants; three members *.f the School Committee, and the Board's architect and inspectors were also present. The following suggestions were considered: (1) To put an additional room on the north side, (j2) to add two rooms to the south of t*he present infant room, (3) to add to the western side of the present building. (4) to put up a separate building. It was deeded to recommend that a separate builcang consisting of two rooms he erected, _ about 20 feet from the orespnt binkling. and on the south-west thereof, the pian to make provision for an two rooms in rhe nrtnre. If this recommendation was carried out. the new rooms would be near the present infant room, so chnc the infant mistress would be able supervise classes both iu tho present mxant room and in the new rooms, die rooms would be lit from east and west so as to get the morning and afternoon sun.
