A young man named Robert Seal fell oft a waggon in Christclnireh on Mon's' . A. lvhcol passed over his chest, and ne died after removal to the hospital. At- n new building in Pvrmont. Sydney. a crane collapsed and killed two men, and a third died shortly after the accident. Under the provisions of the Magistrate s C\.uit s Amendment Act notice has to be given in civil actions of intention to defend, and an interostinpoint in this connection was arjnied between the Magistrate and counsel at the Magistrate's Court a.t Christclnirch on Monday. Counsel for the delendant had given notice to defend under the Statute of Limitations and the plaintiff's solicitor (Mr Cnnin--ham) objected that he had not been given any indication of the character of the defoiKc. Mr H. Vv. Btslion replied that there was no onus on the defendant to state the grounds of bis cleience. Mr Cuningham suggested that opposing counsel should 'be informed when the defence was of a special character, to which the Magistrate replied that tor the convenience of both sides the grounds of defence m such circumstances should be .riven
