The young man Nicholas, who killed his father, Major Nicholas, with a sword, has been committed lor trial on a charge of murder. FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE. The Board of Agriculture has removed the restriction in regard to foot and mouth disease in several Yorkshire districts. EMIGRANTS FOR AUSTRALIA. There being insufficient accommodation on the regular liners, Mr R. C. Hare, of the West Australian Government Agency, has arranged that the Geelong shall take 150 agriculturists in time for the harvest. The Rinmtaka will take 60 domestics, and by' other steamers 2250 emigrants will be sent before the New Year. NICARAGUA. Ex-President Madriz, of Nicaragua, has fled to Honduras. General Estrada has cabled secretly to Mr Knox that he will make amends for the execution of Americans. Received 7.25-p.m., August 25th. THE CRIPPEN CASE. LONDON, August 25. It has been arranged that Crippen and the girl Le Neve shall appear at Bow Street. The trial will be expedited, as there are several American witnesses. THE BEDFORD MISHAP. Tho salvage of H.M.S. Bedford has begun, the. weather having improved. Received 9.25 p.m., August 25th. AUSRALIA—TO LONDON AND BACK. The "Financial News" is publishing a series of articles on "Australia day," with a view of removing English misconceptions. The first article, dealing with the population of the States, states that the natural increase of births over deaths, is more favourable almost than any civilised country and is far in advance of the United Kingdom. The Commonwealth death-rate is probably the lcfwest in the world except New Zealand. Whatever comparative stagnation there is in the population the fault does not lie with the country, which is offering as many attractions to the settler as any other part of the British Dominions. CATTLE DISEASE. Upwards of a dozen cases of "spotted fever " aro reported in the Melton Mowbray district. RUSSIAN ARTILLERY. With reference to the Russian artillery vote the " Novoe Vremya" declares that only a small portion of the artillery has been ordered not in Germany but in France. In return for a model of the new' ordnance obtained from the Creuzot Company', the latter supplies 100 field howitzers, the remamining 500 guns being ordered in Russia.
