CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 18. ldw annual contest JJor the New Zealand Ladies' Golf championship commenced at Shirley this morning in hue spring weather and with t-Jio minor events will last six daws, one round being played to-day. There are 49 championship entries as against 52 at Manawatu last year, and though many of the cracks have been unable to attend there are at present many promising young players, notably Miss Collins, of Wellington, who recently won the Wellington championship, though only seventeen years of age. The form shown to-day was consistently good and in fact it has been steadily improving at every chauipiousln'p meeting. Unfortunately Mrs Bovan, the present champion, was unable to come and Miss Tweed accordingly won lier match default. Miss Collins, the Wellington (champion, prevailed over Miss Alison, of Auckland, whilst Miss Christie, ex-champion, was well up on Mrs Ward of Duncdiu. Miss Brandon, run-ner-up last year, beat Mrs Matheson, whilst Miss E. Pierce (Auckland) prevailed over Mrs O'Meara (Gisborne), and Miss Wray (Manawatu) over Miss Illness (Manawatu). Miss Wray is showing very promising form and is picked by several competent judges as the possible winner of the championship. Miss Sn.odgra.ss, of Westport, West Coast und Manawatu champion, though only arriving this morning artef having been bar bound for five days, easily won her match. Miss Snodgrass beat Mrs Bevan, the New Zealand champion for the Manawatu championship. The contest of the day, however, was that 'between Miss Wood, of Christehurch, and Miss Nora Gorrie, of Auckland. Both players were neck and neck at the 18th hole and an rxtra hole, being played Miss Wood won. Wood beat Miss Nora Gorrie at the nineteenth hole; Mrs Good beat Miss Knubley, 2 up and 1. In the afternoon play took |Mnce for the Donnelly Cup presented by the Jate Mrs G. P. Donnelly, of Hawke's Bay, some years ago through the Hawke's Bay Club to the ladies of Now Zealand. With the Donnelly Cup contest there is being played simultan-

eously a medal competition, both events being decided on stroke handicaps. In the medal competition there is a lir.st prize for handicaps under 10 and one for 10 and over. The Donnelly Cup, however, is open to all winners in one class. Results—Miss F. Moore, Christehurch (handicap 25) net score 77, winner of cup, also winner of lir.-.t pri/.e for those with handicaps of 10 and over; Mrs McCarthy, St. Clair, 10-80, won first pri/.e for' those with handicaps under 10. .Miss Collins, Wellington, 0-82, won the prize for host gro-s score. The next best scorers were —Miss P. Anderson, Christchurch, 20-81; Miss A. Pearce, Web lington, 8-84; Miss O. Kettle. Grevmouth, 23-8-1; Mi;s E. Bell, Wellington, 14-37; Miss C.
