Replying to a deputation of the Labour Unions of Vancouver, demanding that the Chinese poll tax shall be increased from 500 to Kxiu dollars, the Prime Minister, Sir Wilfrid Lauiier. declared that the Government were furred to remember diplomatic relations with the Orient, the- general welfare of Canada, and in addition the peculiar labour requirements of British Columbia. Replying to the Vancouver Board of Trade, asking for a higher tariff, particularly on lumber. Sir Wilfrid Laurior said he felt confident that the Minister of Finance can frame a moderate tariff, which may be in the nature of a compromimse, but fairly satisfactory to the whole community.
