AXIJ Till'; BUIIC.LAKS. Once 3.1 ark Twain's house was hurjiletl by two young nun from iNew York, liotho!' them wro arrested. One of them had his head battered hy the sheriff, who in his turn had two bullet wound*. The writer was present, when .Mark Twain entered the town clerk's olliee, where the two burglars were under arrest: — Said the white philosopher: "So you're, the two young men who ealied at my house last night and forgot 10 put your names .n my guest-book r Xmv that was a, pretty surf. of business for you, wasn't' it, ami a nice way to treatme. after I've been down on' the East Side working for just .such fellows as you. and allot 1 made iijigham take back what be said alt the" Jews." " Kxeuse me. _Vr Clemens.'-' interrupted the haltered and wounded prisoner, for the lir.st time showing any interest in the proceeding-;, I: mv parents are Jewish.'' "Then you're a. disgrace to your race!" "AVell. I guess I am," replied the hurglnr. ".Now you two young men." continued .Mr Clemens, "have' heen u;> to my house, stealing mv tinware, and got. pulled in by these Yankees ui> here. Vou hat! much better have staved in ?\ew York, where you have the pull. J.Jon t you know where you're drilling to? They'll s-nd you i'rom hen; down to Bndeport jail, and the next thing you know you'll he in the Tufted States Senate. There's no other future lelf open to you." It was worthy of remark that even ilie burglar treated Mark Twain with a deierence which was the more marked because of the sullen oontenmt with which the "yegg-man" greeted everv one else. Then Ijn excused liims-li' to go into the home while he rei/i-tored (he names of the two hurglars unonjiis guest-!)!,,,],-, adding after the signature "without permission.''
