Dr Breual.. director of the Tropical Diseases Institnte at Brisbane, reports that the earth-eating disease is prevalent in the Cairns district, and that a number of children are treated in the hospital every week. The disease so far as children are concerned has a permanent blighting influence on mental and moral development. Touching on the question whether a white man could stand the strain of cutting sugarcane in the tropics. Dr 'firenal is of opinion that alcoholism and other debilitating habits did much more to impair the health of the workers than cane-cutting.
