HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

81-M ON TllLl' MEETTN G. . The bi-monthly meeting of the Tilßiiru High School Board of Governors was hold in the. Technical School yesterday. Present—Messrs W. li. Howell (chairman), J. McCabon, 15. R. Maedonald, G. \V. Armitage, U. H. Bowie, J!.. Gillingham, J. Bitchener, and l!ev. T. Stinson.

If was reported that Air Harold Mooro had resigned from the Board, but as he had only resigned to the Waimate Borough Council (which body appointed him) no notice could be taken of the resignation. Mr Moore must also resign to the Timaru High School Board, anil when this is done the Board will ask the Waimate Borough Council to appoint someone in his stead.

The Chairman reported that work at the two High Schools was going on smoothly and satisfactorily; at least he had heard nothing to the'contrary. The doctors informed him that influenza, was raging through Timaru, at the present time, and as a result the attendance had been somewhat affected

The Headmaster reported that there wore now 74 on the roll of the boys' school. The attendance during the past six weeks had been very irregular owing to influenza, and other sickness. The senior wood-work class under Mr Giant, had erected a partition between flic workshop and the armoury. A. division of the same class erected a dressing shed on the Rectory grounds, Ihe materials being provided by the Rugby Union. The Rectory football ground bad taken a line sole of grass, but it required a good deal of heavy rolling to put it in trim for cricket. Mr Brown, agricultural instructor, had inspected the Rectory grounds, and thought (he vacant block facing North Street would be most suitable for demonstration plots. He recommended that it be ploughed at once. Mr Simmers applied for the usual grant to the .school games club.

The report was approved, and the requests contained therein were acceded

The Lady .Principal reported that there are now OS on the roll of the Girls' School. The attendance had been affected by influenza. She had received a. letter from Mr Norrish, lather of a senior pupil, pointing out that his daughter was in the same position as a pupil of the Boys' School to whom tin- Board was giving free education. She had been handicapped ly I; smg practically a year through "illness. Her senior free place expired during the first term of this year, but she was continuing her education for the rest of lho_ year. She was one of the school prefects—appointments made because of good influence in the school —and if character and diligence could make her so. she was certainly worthy of the concession. The school work 'had gone on satisfactorily during the term. A. letter was read from Mr Norrish asking that his daughter bo given an extension of her free place, and as Miss Watt recommended it, it was agreed to.

Mr P. Wnreing wrote that the bridge on Daly's road (Tomuka), was so rotten that be had pulled it up to prevent an accident. 'Would the Board recoup him if he erected a new bridge in its stead P (This bridge gives access to Mr Waroing's section.) Mr Armitage said the old bridge was certainly done for, and it was resolved that the Board should find the material (12ft of concrete piping) for a new crossing, Mr "Wareing to put it in. Mrs Hanlon applied for a reduction of £SO in her rent," at the same time giving a guarantee that the money would be spent in deepening drains on her holding. She also asked for permission to erect cow byres on her farm as she intended to go in for dairying this season.

It was said that Mrs Hanlon is paying an extremely stiff rent (for some of it over 34s an acre), but that it was bid at public auction. The average rent over the whole farm is 28s per acre. Mr Nolan (representing Mrs Hanlon) waited on the Board, and asked for a reduction of rent. He had done his best, but found that at the present rent it was a, losing business. The land was very deceptive; it would grow irood grass (to look at) but there was 111° excess of moisture in it, and it was verylittle good. His wheat crop last season did not pay for cutting and threshing. It was a good farm to sell, but a poor one to live on. He proposed to try milikng—6o cows—this season. the £.j() he proposed to spend on deepening the drains would perma-' nently improve the place. in reply to Mi- Gillingham, Mr Nolan said that he would be willing to surrender the lease at once, and lose all he had spent on the place if the Board would allow him to do so.

After fully discussing the matter Mr Gillingham proposed, and Mr Armitage seconded—"That Mrs Hanlon be allower to surrender her lease on September 30th next.

An amendment was proposed by Mrs, is McCabon and Bitchener that Mrs Hanlon be allowed up to £oo for draining and improving her property, the work to be done to the satisfaction or the Board s ranger. On the motion being put, the voting was, four in favour and four against! Messrs; Armitage, Bowie, Gillingham, and Maodoiiald voted for, and the rest against. Ihe Chairman gave hi.s easting vote against, and the motion was lost. The amendment was then put and carried. Miss Mulholland applied for an in-ci-Pii'-o 111 salary, and it was unanimously resolved to increase her salary by £2O The Secretary was instructed to sue ior all overdue rents. Accounts amounting to £35 ]os fid were passed for payment, and the Board rose.
