Geraldine, at Geraldine 3.15 I p.m. 5 EXCITING SHIELD MATCH. This match was played in AA rellington last Saturday., between Canterbury and AA'ellmgton, the latter being the present holders of the shield. The ground was soit and slippery, rain fallT> K j.i W i lllQ tlle was in' progress, isoth teams gave one of the tost displays of hockey ever seen in AVellinrrton. The back division of the home team drove the ball well, and by so doing gave their forwards plenty of opportunities. Wellington's left' winder, Loader, played a great game, his taking of the passes on his stick beino- a treat to watch. P. Rankin. Canterbury s right winger, played the game ol his hie and was greatly cheered. Luxton, Canterbury's goalkeeper, gave the finest exhibition of goal-keepin<r even seen in AAellington, and he was awarded a hockey stick for the most mmtonous. display on the Canterbury side AVeliintfon ; s first score was cau.v cd thiough the slowness of Goldesbury, one of Canterburys half-backs, who stopped the ball, but was slow i n at-

tempting to get it away. Loader followed up fast, managed to beat hiin, and found the net. Their second score was rather a lucky one. Canterbury, in clearing their circle, drove the ball to Welligton's centre-half, who dribbled it into the circle again and driving hard from the net, the ball in its llight passing several Canterbury players. Wellington's back division was taxed to their utmost in keeping the Canterbury forwards from scoring several times during the second spell. The visitors' first and onlv score was the result of a scramble in Wellington's circle. With a. little, more practice together, the Canterbury combination will be a very hard one to beat, although the best team won on the day. The game ended Wellington 2 goal's, Canterbury onts. Mr Hatch of Christchurch, controlled the game in a very able manner. This lis the second time he lias refereed a j Shield match in Wellington, and it savs a lot for Mr Hatch's ability, when the I holders of the shield apply for 'him on j two occasions.
