THE FISHING INDUSTRY
NO HELP FROM RAILWAYS. Mr Jas. Craigie has received tlic following letter from the Minister of Railways:— "With reference to your representations regarding the decision of the Department not to convey . fish by the second_ express tram from Timaru, I have tiie honour to inform von that 1 rind on looking into the matter "that a goods waggon is specially put on tinmad train that leaves Timaru at 1.30 p.m. and that provision has been made for Timaru fish being sent by this train. The request of the fishermen is. I understand, that a .similar vehicle should be run on the luvoivargillLyttelton express, which leaves Timaru at 4.17 p.m. The circumstances connected with the fishing trade appear now to have materially altered at Timaru, as the fishermen naw have facilities for freezing their fish, and rs the first mail train leaves Timaru as late as 1.38 p.m., it appears to me flint the Timaru fishermen are in a -inch better position for getting their ,"c-h rrrdv for despatch by that train inv.i are the fishermen at Oamaru, aid rs the conveyance of fish by the ?.i7 e. ; rcss train means the haulin- of i I.m ; Jp waggon a distance of 100 miles'each day, I regret J' am unable to authorise compliance with your request to, reinstate the former arrangement."
