A serious fire broke out in the Burnside Cement Company's works at Burnside about 5 o'clock this morning. When the fire was discovered it had a. strong hold but a bucket brigade did splendid work in keeping the flames in check. The fire started in or near the coal stores but the origin is not known. Nearly 600 tons of cement were ready for bagging and were valued at close on £ISOO. They were stored in this wing and the flames obtained their strongest hold among the wooden bins containing the cement. Two out of six electrical motors were practically destroyed, but how far the other motors and macihinery have been injured it is Jiard tctell at present, the roof having collapsed, and covered them ins debris. It is certain that the gear and belt&ag are ntterly destroyed, and these with- the wiring and general electric installation are expensive items, TTha walls and steel girders are all th"a.t 3s left of "the wing where the firei began'. The men were working till midnight last night, and everything appeared safe when they left. '
