BETTER TYRES.
WITH LESS RUBBER. Mr Revell showed a member of the "Herald" stair yesterday a sample of the rubber substitute which Mr G. Metcalfe, of Ashburton, lias discovered. '•Rubber substitute" seems to be rather a misnomer, as it is a composition of which rubber forms a part. Its actual composition is a secret as yet. It makes a substance more pliable than the ordinary car or bicycle tyre ofalternate layers of rubber and canvas. The specimen Sir Revell has in his possession had had one end ground on an emery wheel, and Mr Carson, of Ashburton, who ground it, certifies that it stands such a test far better than the common tyre structure, wearing oil' in fine dust whereas the tyre rubs off in thick pieces. A company has been formed in Christchurch to exploit the invention, in COO £5 shares (nominal), and Mr Revell has a few of these to dispose of at £3O each. Negotiations are in hand for the sale of the Australasian rights, and some one will be sent to London to sell the invention there. An examination of the sample will convince anyone that Mr Metcalfe has hit upon a good thing as a material for tyres, and other uses to which rubber compounds are put, and it is asserted that this new material can be manufactured at n very much lower cost than the rubber goods now in use.
