GOLF.
The following eloquent paneygrio on.. ! golf was pronounced in a recent speech by Mr D. R. Forgau, the President of the National City Bank of Chicago, and a member of the well-knoWn St. Andrew's family of that name. Mr Forgan said: —"It is a - science, tho study of a lTfetime, in winch you may exhaust yourself, but never your subject. It' is a contest, a duel or a moe.'l.ee, calling for • eouragte, skill', strategy, and self-control. It is a test of temper, a trial of honour; a revealer of character. It affords a chance to play the man and act the gentleman. It means yoing into God's out-of-doors, getting close ta_ nature, fresh-air exercise, a sweeping away of the mental cobwebs, a genuine recreation of tho tired tissues. It is a, cure for ciare, an antidote to worry. It includes oompanionships with friends, social' intercourse, opportunities for courtesy, kindliness, and generosity to an op■uonent. It promotes not only physical health, but moral force." So delighted were Mr Forgan's hearers with the above that they determined it should be preserved in some permanent form, and they have carried this out "with true American thoroughness by having the words ongraved in brass platen which in turn, have been framed; and these plates are having ft wide circn; lation, several having been sent to St. Andrews*.
