DO CYCLISTS MAKE THE BEST SCULLERS?
Cyclists who have taken to sculling have done remarkably well in this sport (remarks the Sydney "Daily Telegraph";. On Saturday, lith inst., the brothers, F. and G. .Vlatterson, who raced in the cycling ranks for some years, finished first and second in the Parramatta Hundred, while Dick Arust, the world's champion, who had a great career as a cyclist prior to becoming a sculler, was fourth. Then there is the case of F. S. llagnoy, a prominent cyclist, who, after being in a boat only a few- months, defeated lien Thoroughgood, and is now matched to race Harry Pearce for the championship of Australia with only a year's experience of .sculling. Neil Matterson, an elder brother of the two Matter.sons, who won the big prize money on Saturday, was one of tiie best scullers in his day, and he also was a cyclist, who won a. feugood races on the track. R. Hopping., who is quite a veteran, and one of the best scullers we have in fixed-seat boats, graced the limit mark in the cycling ranks for many seasons. He was not a. success as a. cyclist, however, but more than holds his own in the sculling world in fixed seat boats. The sur-or-ss of cyclistfc in the sculling world is quite the talk of sporting circles. A\ hen Oick Arnst first announced liia intention of taking to sculling, the followers of the sport ridiculed the idea that he would ever be successful, and they were even more pronounced in their views when he indulged in a lew involuntary baths in jus early practice spins, the general opinion being that a successful sculling career was oniy before those who had been practically born and reared in a boat. The fact that cyciist have gone into sculling, and practically taken out all the "plum-;," has dispelled this idea, and whenever a successful wheelman in the future announces his intention of entering the sculling world, he will probably he held in wholesome respect by the followers of this healthy sport.
