Tiw autumn meeting of the South Canterbury, 'i'rottmjj Ciub was held at tlw Wasudyke racecourse yosteriiav, and. was in. all re=m_-cts sui-cessfiil and enjoyab.e. The \>eatii c r was ail tnat could be desireathe acceptaiuvs were good and mciuded some iront-rank trotters; the track, thanks to the tine weather experienced, and to the way it has been looked alter, was in splendid order; and with the very complete arrangements made in every department, it was a foregone conclusion that the meeting would be an attractive one in me eyes of the sporting public. The attendance was on a liberal scale. A sx>ecial train brought i down a goodly number of Christchurch I patrons of the sport, and the south i was also well some who • were at the Uamarii races the previous day coming on to Timaru >estorday. ; A special train ran out from Timaru to I the course, and it conveyed a large J number of passengers. It did not : laave Timaru, however, until too late ] for those who travelled by it to see the j first race. If rxissihle it- should be ! arranged in future either to start the ! first race a little later, or run the train : a little earlier. There were seven | events, and this numoer was found just i right for this time of year, when night < closes in so early. At one time acri- j lnonious discussion and protests were I always associated with trots, but r.t yesterday's meeting there was no protest, and not a sinjrle jarr:n«z note v.,:s Btrnrk all day. The president (Mr John-Sinclair' filled the onerous position of judge, and his decisions were never questioned. There was no t-o----talisator, but eleveu bookmakers, licensed at a fee of £lO each, nlietl their calling. Afternoon tea was supplied by 'Mr Rodgers;. Mr Shewan controlled : a soft drinks booth, and music was \ supolied by the Marine Band. ! The' several races are fully described i below. It is worthy of note here, ; however, that a trotting record for the : Timaru course was established yester- ! day" by a horse from Orari—Mr -T. Watson's Submarine—who cut out the two miles of the Timaru Hnndicap in the remarkably good time of -Amin 41 2-ssec. This is easily the. fastest time that has been done bv any trotter on the Timaru track, and it is the fastest two miles ever trotted oil any course in Xew Zealand outside of Christchurch. In the race mentioned, the old horse, whose past performances put him on the s-ratch mark, was greatly admired for the way he not over the. ground, and had there been another half-dozen strides to go, there is no doubt that he would have wen. The takings were very satisfactory. At the gates £'2o wa= taken, at this ■ saddling paddock and lawn £oo: while from bookmakers £*lot) was received.
