. THE DAVIS CUP. Ftess Aas»oia,tion-By Telegraph-Copyright America has agreed to the belated j English challenge for the Davis Cup ; behig accepted. i FAIR LIE V. TIMARU. j The Fairlie-Mount Cook Hermitage.; motor car and the ordinary train, ; brought down on Saturday a team oi ■ twelve men from the Fairlie Tennis j Club to take part in a match against , Timaru. The weather was deligiitful, there just being enough wind to temper the heat of the su.u for strenuous players. The •'Twelve Apostles," as tiie facetious onlooker remarked well represented their respective clubs, and all enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Both in. singles and doubles the home team were slightly the stronger, but the win was not a very easy one. Several of the younger players from Fairlie show great promise, and the skipper of them was in excellent form in his single. The match was contested in the best of sporting spirit, and the exhibition of free open tennis was about the best seen in Timaru this season. Play was excellent all round, and the men appeared to enjoy their first match without the assistance of ladies. The latter, however, could not trust the men to look after the refreshment department; and took the place of honour at table and beside the tea urn with that courtesy which always, makes players and visitors alike so deeply grateful. Hearty cheers were exchanged ere the visitors left for home. The scores were as follows: Singles: T. F. Thompson v. McCaskill 9 11 Cameron v. Martin 9 5 A. Hawley v. R, Gillingham 9 2 Von.
