INTERNAL DEFENCE.
REPORT ON NEW ZEALAND. AUSTRALIAN PRESS COMMENT. SYDIVEY, March 11. The "Sydney Morning Herald," in commenting on Lord Kitchener's New Zealand report, says it was a poor argument to settle the question of New Zealand joining the Australian Federation on the score of distance, because Perth is further from Sydney and Melbourne than the latter capitals are from Auckland and Wellington. Moreover, the seas, unite and do not divide, people of the same race. Now tnat Lord Kitchener finds thai. Australia and New Zealand must be taken together in war, they be associated in preparation. If advice which suits one is appropriate- to the other it would be absurd to say that these must, draw New Zealand into the Commonwealth. "We- do not believe anything of the kind," it adds, j "but not until each gets its baptism i of fire will there be any needful pres- i suie for union. Lor;: Kitchener's oro- ; gramme will prepare the way. There ' will be a combining in the near future : for the mutual defenca of a mighty j Empire, and this will be a long step j forward." !
